How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Four inches is the right answer for almost every driveway in Henderson County, and five inches for the ones that park something heavy. What goes under the slab decides whether either number lasts.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Four inches. That is the residential standard, and it carries cars, minivans and half-ton pickups without trouble as long as the ground under it was built right. Five inches with rebar is the step up, for driveways that hold trailers, campers or dual-wheel trucks. Under four inches is a slab that fails early no matter what else was done well.
Thickness is the one part of a driveway you cannot add later. Sealer gets reapplied and a cracked section gets replaced, but a thin slab stays thin for its whole short life. The fifth inch is about 25 percent more concrete, and it belongs on a quote as its own line.

When is five inches worth it on a Henderson driveway?
Go to five inches with rebar when the driveway regularly holds weight that a passenger vehicle does not. Point loads matter more than total weight. A camper tongue jack or a loaded trailer jack sits on a few square inches of slab, and that is what punches through a four-inch pour long before a parked truck ever would.
The usual cases here:
- A boat, camper or utility trailer that lives on the driveway instead of behind the house
- A three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck, especially a dually, parked daily
- Farm-edge lots out in the county where a tractor, a grain truck or a gravel delivery crosses the drive
If only one part of the driveway takes that load, the whole slab does not have to be five inches. A thickened section under the trailer pad is normal, and a crew will form it that way if you tell them what parks where at the site visit.
Does the base under a driveway matter more than the thickness?
On Henderson clay, the base matters at least as much. Five inches of concrete poured straight onto clay will crack and drop sections faster than four inches on four to six inches of compacted gravel. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in bending, and a slab only bends when the ground under it moves away.
Most lots on the East End and out Zion Road sit on clay that swells through a wet April and shrinks tight in August. Compacted gravel spreads the load and gives water somewhere to go, so the slab stays supported instead of bridging a void. Toward Reed and Spottsville the problem flips. River-bottom ground holds a high water table in spring, and the base there has to drain rather than hold.
Then the winter. Henderson gets a freeze most nights and a thaw most days from December into March, and every cycle lifts saturated subgrade a little. A drive on a drained base rides it out. One on wet clay heaves at the apron first, which is why a crew looks there before anything else.
What is the 4-2-1 rule for concrete?
The 4-2-1 rule is a mix ratio, not a thickness rule. It describes hand-mixing by volume, roughly four parts gravel to two parts sand to one part cement, for someone working out of a wheelbarrow on a post or a small pad. It says nothing about how thick a driveway should be, and it surfaces on driveway searches because the numbers look like dimensions.
Nobody pours a driveway that way. Ready-mix arrives specified by compressive strength, and for exterior flatwork in Kentucky that means a 3,500 to 4,000 psi air-entrained mix. The entrained air is what matters in this climate, microscopic bubbles that give freezing water room to expand instead of scaling the surface off in year three.
So ask a bidder for the psi, whether the mix is air-entrained, and how much water gets added at the truck. Extra water on site makes concrete easier to place and weaker once it sets.
Does wire mesh or rebar make a driveway stronger?
Neither one stops concrete from cracking, and neither substitutes for thickness. Steel holds a crack tight after it forms, so the two sides stay level and locked instead of drifting apart and chipping. Worth having, and a separate job from thickness.
Placement is where it goes wrong. Mesh has to sit on chairs in the middle third of the slab. Laid on the dirt and walked on during the pour, it ends up buried in the base doing nothing. On a five-inch driveway a rebar grid on chairs is the honest version, and it costs more to set. Watch the site the morning of the pour. If the steel is on the ground and nobody is pulling it up, ask.
How can I tell how thick my existing driveway is?
You can usually measure it without cutting anything. Three ways, cheapest first:
- The edge at the apron. Where the driveway meets the street or the sidewalk, the slab edge is often exposed an inch or two. Clear the dirt back with a trowel and put a tape on it.
- A broken corner or a separated crack. Any place the slab has heaved or a corner has snapped off gives you a clean cross-section. Measure the full depth, not the part showing above grade.
- A drilled hole. A hammer drill with a masonry bit and a piece of stiff wire gives an exact number in two minutes. A crew will do it on a site visit when the answer changes the recommendation.
Measure in more than one spot. On an uneven subgrade a driveway can be four inches at the garage and two and a half at the street.
Why are 1990s subdivision driveways so often under three inches?
Because thickness is invisible once the forms come off, and it was the cheapest place for a production builder to save. Driveways from that era frequently measure two and a half to three inches over an inch or two of loose fill. They looked identical to a properly built drive on move-in day and started failing around year ten.
The pattern is recognizable. Cracking in a tight grid rather than one or two long lines, corners breaking off at the apron, a section by the garage that has settled enough to pond water after rain. When quotes come in for a concrete driveway, read the two lines most estimates blur together. One states the slab thickness in inches. The other states the depth of compacted base and what it is. If a quote names neither, ask for both in writing before you compare it to anything, and ask what the crew measured on the old slab.
