What stamping actually adds to a pour
Stamped concrete is a regular slab, same base, same thickness, same joints, that gets colored and pressed with rubber mats while it is still soft enough to take the pattern and firm enough not to slump. The window for that is about an hour on a warm day. Everything about a stamped job is timed around that hour: the pour starts earlier, the crew is bigger, and the mats go down in a planned sequence so the pattern does not repeat where you would notice.
- Integral color mixed into the concrete at the plant, so a chip shows color underneath instead of gray.
- Release color dusted on before stamping, which settles into the low spots and gives the two-tone stone look.
- The pattern pressed in with mats, with a hand tool at the edges and around the steps.
- A wash and two coats of sealer after the cure, which is what makes the color read and the surface shed water.
- Control joints planned into the pattern so the cuts fall on a grout line instead of through a stone.

Stamped, exposed aggregate, or a good broom finish
Stamped
For a patio that is the point of the back yard, a front walk on a house with some presence, or a driveway border. Most expensive, most upkeep, most impact.
Exposed aggregate
For pool decks, walks that get wet, and anyone who wants texture without a pattern. Best grip of the three, easy to keep, and the color comes from the stone.
Broom finish
For everything else. It is not a compromise; a clean broom finish with crisp joints on a patio behind a brick ranch looks right, costs the least, and lasts the longest with the least attention. The concrete patio page covers it.

A west-facing patio in Henderson gets the full afternoon sun from May to September, and that is what fades a stamped color. Sealer is the sunscreen. Two coats after the cure, another coat before the second winter, and then every two or three years depending on the exposure. A north-side patio under a big oak can go longer; a pool deck in full sun cannot. The sealer also keeps the winter salt-slush and the freeze-thaw out of the surface, which matters more here than the color does.

What is the downside of stamped concrete?
Maintenance and honesty about it. A stamped patio needs resealing every two to three years ($350 - $700) or the color fades and the surface goes dull, and a sealed surface is slicker when wet than a broom finish. It also cracks like any other slab, and a crack through a stamped pattern is more visible than one through a broom finish. Go in knowing that and it is a great patio. Go in expecting stone and it disappoints.
Can stamped concrete go over my existing patio?
Not as a stamped pour. Stamping needs a fresh slab at least four inches thick, and a thin overlay on an old patio does not hold the pattern or the color for long. If the existing slab is sound, a stamped overlay system exists, but it is a specialty product with its own limits and it is not what most Henderson patios need. The straight answer is usually a tear-out and a new stamped pour.
Which stamped pattern holds up best?
The ones with shallower texture and fewer fine edges: ashlar slate and a wide flagstone are the workhorses. A deep wood-plank or cobblestone texture looks sharp the first year and shows wear at the high points sooner, especially where chairs drag. Color matters as much as pattern; a mid-tone earth color hides dust, pollen and the occasional leaf stain better than a dark charcoal or a pale sand.
Is exposed aggregate cheaper than stamped?
Yes. Exposed aggregate (the top of the slab washed off to show the stone) runs $12 - $17 per sq ft against $16 - $24 per sq ft for stamped, needs less upkeep, and gives the most grip of any finish, which is why it is a common pool-deck choice. It does not come in patterns. It comes in the color of the stone.
